Call it a robe, a wrap, a large piece of fabric with a seam or two. It drapes, it ties, it flows. Let me introduce to you, the kimonos of the 21st century: Yeva Don.
When I first met Yeva in one of her love dresses, I knew I had to know more. Tucked away in her cozy little apartment in Gramercy where her collection sits, lies a warm sense of calm. She very much reads as a free-spirited yogi and is very careful to look you in the eye when you speak as she is in the process of digesting your every word. Of Russian and Israeli decent, this beautiful woman lives and breathes the garments she puts out and naturally cultivates the essence that they carry.
Made up of florals, geometric patters, solids and the like, Yeva juxtaposes selected prints and patterns in her oversized silhouettes to achieve her vision. Going through her current collection nicely presented in it's own little corner in her warm Gramercy apartment, Yeva explained to me that she only makes a few pieces per style depending on which textiles she finds from her travels all over the world. As a result, each piece is very unique. What I gathered from these free-form, season-less pieces was the versatility of them all and how many different ways this can actually work as a layering piece in the wardrobe. Yeva likes to wear them by itself as formless and as organic as it gets. I did the same but with a cinch at the waist to finish above the knee of course. The beautiful pattern play in all these pieces however, make for great outfit completers as they add dimension to the most mundane of outfits. Wear it over a roll neck during the winter, play it next to a textured sweater in the fall or throw it on over a button down shirt with a defining cinch. The Yeva Don silhouettes welcome the juxtaposition of the formless and the structured, free-spirited but with order.
